4 | Wealth & Finance - Private Education Awards 2024 Most Dedicated Local Primary School 2024 - Northern Virginia The story of Nysmith School begins far before its inception, when Carole Nysmith was fully immersed in her role as a Fairfax County G/T Program teacher. Deeply invested in the educational experience of her students, Carole sought to create meaningful connections that would further empower their learning in new and unique ways. Unfortunately, with class sizes ranging from 25 to 38 students, Carole found it nearly impossible to provide each child with the individualised attention they deserved. Though she didn’t know it at the time, this would become the catalyst for change – change that took the form of none other than Nysmith School. Established in 1984, Nysmith School marked a drastic shift in the way education was delivered to primary school children. Embodying Carole’s vision to encourage each and every student to unlock their true potential, the school invited specialist teachers, ambitious students, and proud parents into the midst of what would quickly become a nationally renowned primary school. To Carole, creating a space in which every child could thrive was paramount, and she applied her experience to strike the perfect student-teacher balance. In doing so, she made sure to limit each class to strictly eighteen students maximum, while simultaneously assigning two teachers to each group. In doing so, Carole cultivated the exact environment she had always hoped to see within the educational sphere – one that guarantees personalised learning experiences that focus on the individual success of every child. Though the venture may not have been a straightforward one, Carole was determined to see to it that the children of the local area were presented with the opportunity to excel to the fullest, ultimately distinguishing Nysmith School as a one of a kind entity within the region’s primary school sphere. With no other school able to hold a candle to Nysmith School’s individualisation, it’s clear that it has certainly made waves within the educational sphere. Though it may be commonplace for many schools to onboard teachers who jump between subjects depending on their needs on the day, Nysmith School stands as a shining exception. Built around the basis of fun and cohesiveness, Carole went above and beyond to seek out teachers who genuinely loved their fields, and ensured that they remained tied to their favourite subjects, no matter what. In doing so, teachers can deliver lessons that aren’t only educational, but capture a sense of genuine passion that greatly elevates the learning experience. This mindset was applied to the school’s entire curriculum, granting students access to exceptionally crafted lessons that perfectly reflect their teachers’ specialty. In fact, the curriculum itself stands as an additional representation of Carole’s unwavering vision of greatness for her students. Comprised of essential subjects – namely daily math reading, science, technology, foreign language, and history – Nysmith School encourages children to broaden the skillsets necessary to excel in life, and have fun while doing so. Partnered with the school’s commitment to helping children to onboard essential executive and interpersonal skills, Nysmith School elicits an eagerness to share new ideas with one another. In essence, Nysmith School strives to see its students find happiness and joy among their peers, and is willing to go the extra mile to build up this collaborative approach. Combined, these elements depict a dedicated destination school that has resonated with parents across the country. Though it was originally a niche school with only 55 students, it has spent almost four decades evolving into a renowned learning environment – one that parents are willing to cross the country for, specifically to give their children ample opportunities for their futures. Part of this renown certainly manifests through Nysmith School’s STEM program, wherein dedication and empowerment coincide in order to uplift all manner of children. Whether they’re a speedy learner, or need a little extra guidance, Nysmith School is dedicated to matching their pace in order to keep the learning experience fresh, enjoyable, and engaging. With teachers who are known for being warm, inviting, and genuinely invested in their students’ livelihoods, Nysmith School has developed a framework upon which children and parents can rely. Boasting an exceptionally low turnover rate – especially when compared to the wider education sphere – Nysmith School outlines how entirely possible it is to make teaching fun for all, resulting in moments that see educators genuinely enjoying each day on the job. Ensuring that both teachers and students are loving what they do was critical to Carole when she first founded Nysmith School, and it’s clear that this desire is still paying off to this day. Having been recognised not only by the Private Education Awards 2024, but by various other prestigious entities across the educational sphere, Nysmith School is a multi-award-winning primary school that prides itself on helping students envision their future, and then granting them the tools needed to pursue it. Fostering a distinct love for learning among children, the school has championed the art of interactive and responsive education, creating an atmosphere in which both students and teachers can flourish alongside one another. It’s for this very reason that Wealth and Finance International is delighted to feature Nysmith School in this programme, and we eagerly anticipate its upcoming successes in the years to come. 6 | Wealth & Finance - Private Education Awards 2024 Best Early Childhood Montessori Primary House 2024 - Pennsylvania Based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Maria’s House Montessori is one of several North American practices that exhibits the exceptional standards of care promoted by the American Montessori Society (AMS, New York) and the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI, Amsterdam). At Maria’s House, the team understands the significance of children’s education journeys and strives to support children and caregivers through this critical time. The search for lively, impactful early education has led many families to discover Maria’s House and the wonderful work of Maria Montessori. In the industrial age, Maria was a champion for the working classes and a reformer who challenged governments when they were not providing children with the care they deserved. When Maria first entered the new and controversial field of psychiatric medicine in 1900, the practice of compulsory, age-segregated schooling for boys between 6-12 had been unsuccessful across Europe. These schools were designed to prepare children for factory life or military service and were environments where boys were often abused and systemically dissocialised. Those who refused to attend and follow their fathers into exhausting physical labour were arrested and often placed in asylums after being judged as mentally ill. In response to these horrendous conditions, Maria asked, “Explain to me please how we humans raised our children to become artisans, scholars, literate thinkers, citizens, and problem solvers for thousands of years prior to them being snatched from their families, divided by age, and forced into compliance?” Maria spent five years working with ‘lost boys’ in the tenements of Rome where she concluded that “they are simply children and were meant to be raised in the safety of their families, not brutalised for the purposes of industrialism.” Thus began Maria’s journey from her first practice as a public health physician in Rome’s San Lorenzo tenement to establishing a series of sanctuaries for children. These educational sanctuaries were steered by compassionate adults who offered children the dignity they deserved and the freedom to exercise their curious minds. Serving as an orphanage in 1907, The Fretz Mansion is an exquisite Victorian building that provides the perfect setting for Maria’s House. Based on the observations and discoveries of Maria Montessori, Maria’s House has developed a fully immersive Montessori environment. The practice offers a five-day Montessori Primary program, inviting children ages three to six to explore the world in a safe and engaging Montessori way. Every guide at the practice follows the same three-year training cycle, serving time as a House Intern and a House Scholar before completing a year of supervised residency and research. As a House Intern, individuals engage in readings, in-service sessions, and mastery of hundreds of works and their related lessons. This is followed by a year enrolled in a rigorous AMS accredited course of study at either the Princeton Center for Teacher Education or Chestnut Hill College. Maria’s House Montessori is passionate about the development of its guides and covers all the costs of their education. Under the guidance of Laine Walker, a fully accredited Montessori Master Teacher, and a board of internationally known Montessorians, staff strive to channel the spirit and vision of Maria Montessori throughout their work. As the Director and Principal Guide of Maria’s House, Laine maintains high program standards that meet or exceed those established by the American Montessori Society. At Maria’s House, every child is respected as an individual and gently encouraged to explore the beauty and wonder of the world around them. Maria Montessori primarily focused on early child development between the ages of three and six, and it is this research that the practice strives to build upon. Between these ages, children are driven by natural curiosity and possess the ability to acquire knowledge of language, mathematics, science, music, and art while constructing the motor movements necessary to learn coordination and gain confidence. Maria’s House is dedicated to fostering self-reliance, nurturing collaboration and cooperation, and feeding the natural curiosity within every child. Each year, Maria’s House welcomes no more than 54 preschoolers into its Montessori Primary program to ensure that children consistently receive high-quality care and support. In addition to the traditional curriculum subjects, Maria’s House offers a Cultural Anthropology pilot program informed by Dr Montessori’s search for a natural way to help children explore the heritage of native cultures. Over the course of the academic year, junior explorers receive weekly visits from experienced Cultural Attaches, seasoned international guides who stop by at lunchtime as characters from various times and places. These visits involve sharing foods, crafts, stories, customs, and languages from all over the world to provide children with an enriching global education. Throughout the summer, the Montessori Bridge program offers fifty children, between ages three and eight, the chance to experience endless fun and educational games alongside its usual range of advanced developmental opportunities. Activities encompass everything from golf, fencing, chess, and team sports to organic gardening, animal studies and culinary art, creating a truly unforgettable summer experience for children and their families. Based on Maria Montessori’s early-childhood work, Maria’s House is an educational haven dedicated to fostering children’s growth and paving their way to further learning. Under the watchful eye of dedicated staff, young learners are encouraged to constantly learn and grow, guided by their own inner muse to explore the richness of childhood. Maria’s House Montessori strives to enrich children’s development in ways that will last a lifetime and for its transformative work, the practice has won this year’s Apr24547 Inspired by the early-childhood work of Maria Montessori, a prominent Italian physician and educator, Maria’s House Montessori is an AMS primary practice and intern training side dedicated to ongoing research and education development. Since its inception, its mission was remained the same: to develop and maintain an early childhood practice that Dr Montessori herself would be proud of. In the wake of its success, we endeavour to find out more about how Maria’s House Montessori fosters the potential in every child.

8 | Wealth & Finance - Private Education Awards 2024 Most Progressive Independent School 2024 - South East England St Dunstan’s College on Stanstead Road, London, is comprised of a nursery, junior school, senior school, and sixth form. A trailblazing independent institution that has offered a forward-thinking education since 1888, St Dunstan’s proudly boasts what it calls “The St Dunstan’s Difference”, a set of eight distinguishing points that highlight the heritage of the school and its unique approach to education. Promoting high achievement without the arrogance and championing individuality, diversity, and equality in equal measure, St Dunstan’s is as progressive as it is exemplary. Providing students of all ages with a broad, liberal, and exciting academic education, St Dunstan’s College nurtures an ambitious and forward-looking academic community that strikes the balance between embracing the modern and respecting the historic traditions that have defined more than 130 years of excellence. A school driven by the values of courage, creativity, confidence, compassion, and curiosity; this selfless institution prides the development of the individual over the personality of the school as a whole. Championing the diversity of its pupils, St Dunstan College’s motto, Albam Exorna, or “Adorn the White”, is a reference to the white shield of its logo, a blank canvas that students are invited to project their own hopes, dreams, and stories onto. Whatever their ambitions, the school strives to support and inspire every pupil to unlock their full potential, be comfortable in their own skin, and stay determined to do good for themselves and their community. Since the school is situated in a vibrant corner of South-East London, these possibilities are endless. Offering students a co-educational environment that aptly prepares them for a world outside of school, many of the facilities of this estate are virtually brand new, with St Dunstan’s having undergone a major redevelopment in 2021 that saw it add a new junior school, STEM block, sixth form centre, performing arts centre/theatre, and a number of outdoor education/recreation facilities. St Dunstan’s’ epicentre, The Great Hall, has also undergone extensive renovation in recent years, all whilst keeping its wonderful historic charm. As seen through the new £25 million STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) facilities mentioned above, science has always been a huge part of the school, something that dates right back to its first headmaster, who was also a chemist, Mr. Charles Maddock Stuart. As a result of its science-driven leader, St Dunstan’s College was the first school in England that was designed with built-in science laboratories, and in the early days, the school’s curriculum offered three times the amount of science lessons as were traditionally provided. Today, with 12 state-of-the-art labs, as well as engineering workshops and purpose-built mathematics classrooms, St Dunstan’s is keeping the spirit of its inaugural headmaster alive and continuing to train the next generation of experts in these vital fields. Science is far from the only area of focus for St Dunstan’s, and over the years, numerous headmasters have come along and further advanced the curriculum, be it with an emphasis on sports and the outdoors, caring for students as individuals, or underscoring the importance of resilience and creativity. It is for this reason that St Dunstan’s’ senior school for 11–16-year-olds today boasts a varied curriculum that builds off of the legacy of its former headmasters. Students will be afforded the opportunity to study numerous subjects, as well as take part in a range of inclusive co-curricular activities. With the 17 taught subjects spanning the basics of maths, English, and science, as well as some of the more specialised areas of interest like art, drama, music, and languages from Latin to Spanish, there is something for everyone to enjoy at St Dunstan’s. As many parents know, secondary schools across the UK often fail to prepare their students for life. Focusing on a traditional academic education is important, but these subjects do little to help an individual as they leave a schooling environment and make their own way in the world. To remedy this, St Dunstan’s offers a robust additional curriculum named after former headmaster Charles Stuart. Covering everything from relationships to future skills, public speaking, and even building furniture, St Dunstan’s’ pupils are given a curriculum for life. It is not just the senior school where St Dunstan’s shines, and its brilliance can be felt right from its nursery, which takes on children aged both three and four. The school’s nursery curriculum is very much guided by the interests of children at this age, and staff here embed within them a number of key learning behaviours that will serve them well as they progress on through their academic journeys. Celebrating learning and play, pupils leave this nursery with a range of budding interests and the confidence to try new things. Then comes the junior school, which sees pupils from four onwards provided an opportunity to make their first marks on the aforementioned blank canvas that is the St Dunstan’s shield. Ensuring academic rigour, exploratory play, and a tailored approach to learning, pupils of this co-educational junior school benefit majorly from having a form teacher who will deliver the majority of their lessons, ensuring familiarity and a strong learning relationship. There are also a series of specialist teachers on hand whose knowledge far exceeds the core curriculum. At the other end of the scale is St Dunstan’s’ sixth form, which builds off of the previous education of students and the diverse Lewisham community in which it is set to offer pupils an individualised future, one that considers their personality and not just their grades. Through its providing of The St Dunstan’s College Diploma, a threefold programme consisting of three or four A-Levels subjects, a number of leadership opportunities, and additional future-proof qualifications, St Dunstan’s goes against the exam-driven norm to focus on the person. This is not to say that St Dunstan’s does not deliver when it comes to exam results, as it far exceeds the UK average. For example, just last year, its GCSE results saw 68% of students achieve grades 9-7, or A*-A in the old system. When this is extended from 9-6, or A*-B, a further 16% of students are brought into the fold. A similar story follows regarding the A-Level results, with 58% students receiving an A* or an A, and 86% receiving A*-B. This highlights ““We are proud of our historic façade, but all the more excited by the energy and colour that is exuded within.” - Headmaster Mr. Nick Hewlett. ”

9 | Wealth & Finance Q1 2024 the academic prowess of St Dunstan’s’ students and is a testament to the institution’s enduring quality. Sitting atop a 97% parent satisfaction rate concerning academic progress and bolstered by the fact that 96% of its leavers receive offers from Russell Group Universities, St Dunstan’s College delivers academic excellence with a difference, leveraging a liberal approach and eradicating the pretentiousness from the private education sector. As The Good Schools Guide puts it, “The St Dunstan’s ethos could come across as a bit ‘woke’ on paper, but in real life we found the school to be inspiring, both liberating and liberal thanks to interesting leadership, committed teaching, and a very engaged student body.” Recognised for the second year in a row as being the region’s most progressive school, St Dunstan’s has received a host of other awards over the years, pertaining to its ongoing excellence in this sphere. With more than a century of prestigious history already behind it, it is remarkable that St Dunstan’s is continuing to scale such impressive new heights. Building off of this tremendous legacy with an ongoing commitment to pioneer, as seen in its suite of new facilities that represent modern education at its finest, we celebrate St Dunstan’s College as the Most Progressive Independent School 2024 - South East England. 12 | Wealth & Finance - Private Education Awards 2024 Most Inclusive Prep School 2024 – London In September 2023, Broomwood Hall Lower School, Broomwood Hall Upper School, and Northcote Lodge School joined forces to teach under one name – Broomwood. Though the schools have been combined, Broomwood utilises the three spaces in a unique manner to give its students as much educational opportunity as possible. First, children are educated together at Little Broomwood and Broomwood Pre-Prep until they are old enough to move to Broomwood Prep – Boys and Broomwood Prep- Girls. Broomwood recognises that girls and boys have different academic and pastoral needs when they approach the prepubescent years and have addressed this by delivering lessons in a single-sex environment from the age of seven. However, unlike many single-sex schools across the country, Broomwood encourages the boys and girls to come together for an extensive range of activities that take place in a co-ed setting. Children belong to the same House system and share uniforms so that they still feel a part of the same school. Telling us more about the culture, the Head of Broomwood Girls, Louisa McCafferty says, “It provides an extraordinary education, full of fun and adventure, where children learn that growth and development come as much from making mistakes as getting things right.” Broomwood takes a student-first approach in its practices, something that Louisa believes has a huge positive impact on their development. She tells us, “We are so proud of the people our children become. Broomwood pupils leave us as confident, resilient, enthusiastic, and kind individuals who make a positive contribution wherever they find themselves. This, we believe, is in a large part down to the wellbeing and pastoral care that we provide. We have an unusual approach, which places a huge emphasis on listening to our pupils and addressing their needs immediately.” The school conducts an annual survey amongst students to gain a better understanding of their well-being. Any issues that arise are swiftly addressed, though Broomwood is delighted to see that the vast majority of recipients answer, ‘very happy.’ Additionally, students at Broomwood Girls can choose the member of staff that they trust the most to care for them, acting as a tutor over the academic year. This member of staff will meet with them regularly for one-to-one and small group sessions to discuss academic concerns, social issues, and provide unlimited support throughout the year. Broomwood’s learning support dog, Lyra, is a popular member of Broomwood Prep – Boys and provides additional educational support to the students. Another interesting approach that Broomwood takes is that it teaches its students to learn through play. This means allowing the children to get involved in their education by making it fun, for example having life-sized dinosaurs roaming the corridors and garden or simulating a teddy bear’s hospital to teach students about the history of vaccinations. These experiences catch the students’ interest and make them want to learn more. “This enables children to see how the world is connected, stimulating both the left and right sides of the brain, enhancing linguistic and creative capacity. It also enables our pupils to develop creative thinking, planning, and teamworking skills,” Caron Mackay, Head of Broomwood Pre-Prep explains. As for the future, Broomwood is undergoing an extensive refurbishment that will continue over the summer. Following the recent launch of Little Broomwood, which is complete with brand new classrooms and an exciting adventure playground, the school is looking to make improvements across all Broomwood sites. Broomwood takes an utterly unique approach with its students that has proven successful time and time again. Through ensuring that students feel heard and supported, the school can allow them to focus on their education with no additional worries. From annual surveys and the assignment of tutors to co-ed socialisation and learning through play, it is evident that Broomwood has painstakingly developed its methodologies with its students’ best interests at heart. It is for this reason that Broomwood has been rightfully named the Most Inclusive Prep School 2024 – London. 13 | Wealth & Finance Q1 2024 May24443 Most Enriching Prep School 2024 - London For just shy of 140 years, Dulwich Prep London has stood as a beacon of excellence in the English preparatory schooling scene, offering a modern and holistic approach to education that rests on more than century of instilling such values as gratitude, service, and humility into students. An unabashed school for boys, taking on nursery-aged girls only, pupils here benefit from a learning environment that exists at the forefront of change and technology, all underscored by a strong set of values that distinguish its students both academically and more broadly as well-rounded, successful individuals. Boasting more than 800 pupils, Dulwich Prep London is proud to be the largest boys’ prep school in the country, but not at the sacrifice of either quality or space. Situated on a site of almost 30 acres in the leafy green village of Dulwich, the school is defined by the rich culture and diversity on its doorstep, with its location being just a short distance from the heart of London. Much like the city itself, the school strikes the perfect blend between the historic and the modern, particularly concerning its architecture and cutting-edge facilities. Encompassed by 25 acres of green fields and complete with AstroTurf, a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, a 300-seat concert hall, and much more, all of the facilities a child will need to the make the most of their educational experience are available in abundance at Dulwich Prep. Remarkably, the sheer size of the school does not lend itself to feelings of overwhelm, with a unique sense of cosiness allowing pupils to leverage these best-in-class facilities in an atmosphere that radiates warmth, friendliness, and a strong community spirit. The prep school itself is split into three distinct age-based categories, Early Years (3-5-year-olds), Pre-Prep (Years 1 and 2), and Prep (Years 3-8). It is at the start of the Pre-Prep stage that Year 1 pupils begin to receive a formal education, this delivered in the form of 25-minute lessons that lay the basis for capturing the attention and concentration that will prove so important as they progress through their academic journeys. Taught by exemplary teaching staff throughout their tenure, students are encouraged to progress at their own pace. To further cater to the needs of pupils, the Prep stage is divided into three sub-categories, Lower, Middle, and Upper School respectively, with these two-year chunks empowering Dulwich Prep in tailoring its pastoral care, curriculum, and co-curricular activities based on development and demand. The Lower School very much emphasises maths and English across its timetable, but pupils are provided with a knowledgeable class teacher, this allowing them to take part in and develop skills across the likes of sport, drama, music, and computing. Moving on to the Middle School, where students access the main site for the first time, here they enjoy specialist teaching ordered by sets so that the talent of every individual may be nurtured accordingly. Learning is aided by each boy receiving their own iPad, a useful tool that measurably supports development. This stage of school life is focused on the tests that take place in Year 6, but there is plenty of time for various cocurricular activities, be it rock climbing on the school’s purpose-built wall or cooking in its state-of-the-art kitchen facilities. Upper School is then comprised of Years 7 and 8, the final two years of prep school that prepare students for the remarkable futures that lie ahead of them. From mentoring programmes to day-to-day duties around the school, there is a real focus on independence at this stage, interspersed with the same high-quality teaching leading up to the final exams that are usually required before progressing to secondary education. Educational visits also take place at this final stage, including an unforgettable and challenging week-long residential. Excitingly, there are plans in place for the school to further extend its provision by educating boys up to the age of 16 starting in September 2025, a fantastic way to mark its 140th anniversary. Ultimately, whatever age boys leave Dulwich Prep London, they will do so as confident, happy, and intelligent young men aptly prepared for the next stage of their educational journeys. Alumni have gone on to achieve great things postDulwich Prep, something that Headmaster Miss Louise Davidson and her team are eternally proud of. For its continued academic excellence, we celebrate Dulwich Prep London as the Most Enriching Prep School 2024 – London, its third consecutive year being featured in the Private Education Awards.
