New Sage for Accountants capability brings client transactions from different supported experiences into one workflow, helping practices review and prepare records more efficiently

Sage the leader in accounting, financial, HR and payroll technology for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), has unveiled Period Review to help accountants and bookkeepers reduce the manual work involved in checking, correcting and preparing client transactions for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. The new capability comes as HMRC has begun signing up sole traders and landlords who are required to use MTD for the 2026/27 tax year but have not already done so.

Announced at Accountex Manchester, Period Review brings transaction data from clients using Sage Sole Trader or categorising transactions for MTD within supported banking apps, including Tide Accounting, into one period-by-period review workflow. Sage for Accountants users can quickly search and sort transactions, correct categorisations, create adjustments and journals, apply bulk actions and submit updates without repeatedly moving between different tools.

“Accountants and bookkeepers are being asked to manage more information, for more clients, more frequently,” said Lisa Ewens, SVP Product, Small Business and Accountants, Sage. “As HMRC begins signing up those who have yet to act, practices need a simpler way to bring client records into shape without creating an ever-growing administrative workload. By simplifying that process, Period Review will help accountants and bookkeepers maintain confidence in the information they are working with and focus more of their expertise on supporting clients.”

Giving accountants and bookkeepers more time to support their clients

Preparing client records for MTD can involve much more than collecting information. Accountants and bookkeepers may need to identify missing or incorrectly categorised transactions, make adjustments and resolve queries with clients before the information can be used in the reporting process.

The additional workload is already a concern across the profession. Recent HMRC research found that 86% of accounting and tax professionals expected to take on additional tasks to support clients with MTD compliance.

By bringing these steps into one consistent review workflow, Period Review helps practices work through client records more quickly and with less manual effort, regardless of which supported Sage experience the client uses. Accountants and bookkeepers can identify transactions requiring attention, make bulk corrections and adjustments, and focus their time on the areas where professional judgement is needed.

“Reviewing client records can involve moving between different systems, checking individual transactions and going back to clients when something does not look right,” said Aaron Patrick, Founder, Boffix Accountants.  “Period Review brings that work into a much simpler and more consistent process. It gives us greater confidence in the information we are working with and more time to focus on the conversations and advice that really make a difference to our clients.”

Making MTD simpler for business owners

For sole traders and landlords, MTD introduces a new way of keeping digital records and reporting throughout the year. Yet many remain uncertain about what is required. New Sage research found that 70% of sole traders did not feel confident about the steps needed to stay compliant with MTD.

Businesses can keep and categorise their records using Sage Sole Trader or within supported banking apps, making it easier to manage MTD through tools that fit how they already work. Period Review brings that transaction data into a consistent workflow for their accountant or bookkeeper, making it easier to identify and correct issues throughout the year, keep client records up to date and reduce unnecessary back and forth.
